July has arrived and we move into the busiest tourist period of the summer. July and August sees the biggest influx of Spanish and foreign holiday-makers into Nerja and both Bekie and myself should be getting much busier at work. However it appears that tourism on the Costa del Sol is in decline. This year to date hotels have seen a 40% drop in business and this is on top of a similar fall last year. Property prices in Nerja and the surrounding villages are ridiculously high and maybe these will also start falling as fewer people visit from overseas. Certainly the airfares to this part of the world are contributing to the drop in tourism - carriers such as EasyJet and British Airways are offering flights for 150 GBP upwards when a few years ago you could catch a flight for 60GBP. It seems now the cheap flights are bound for eastern Europe; Bulgaria, Turkey and other countries in this region.
Bekie is still working in the Smugglers' Inn and seems to be enjoying herself. She is now working only two double-shifts; Thursday and Friday 10am-2pm then 5pm-10pm. I am still working from 8pm every evening except Tuesdays. The bar is still fairly quiet so I am hoping the coming months will be busier.
The Spanish language studying has gone off the boil since Bekie and I started our jobs out here. Hopefully this will also pick up again.
Finally Bekie's birthday will be celebrated later this month on the 16th. Special guests include Ivan, Keith, Nicole, Kirsty and Andrea. Should be a cracker!
